Got a disconnect between the way you write and speak?

06/03/2022

One of the main reasons people come to me for help is because there's a disconnect between the way they write and the way they speak.

🗣 They can chat about their business and articulate themselves fine when they're talking...

✍🏻 But when it comes to writing, it sounds like it's coming from a different person.

Recently, my partner wrote a message to a local plumber because he needed someone to fix the dishwasher. This is part of the message he put together:

"Good afternoon. The button on my dishwasher is no longer clicking, and therefore I can not use the appliance. Would you please be able to provide me with a quotation for coming to fix it?"

He showed me the message to check it and I just thought, why are you pretending you're from Downton Abbey?

So, I softened it by using more casual language and made it more succinct:

"Hi, the start button on my dishwasher isn't working, so I can't turn it on. Can you please give me a quote for fixing it?"

I showed him the new message, and he said that's what he meant, but it didn't come out like that.

Sometimes you know what you want to say you just can't quite write it. But don't worry, because I can.

Need a hand connecting your words on paper to the way you speak?
