Is it 'versus' or 'verses'?

03/14/2022

This is a slightly niche issue, but one that I've come across a couple of times.

'verses' 🆚 'versus'

Confused? 😵‍💫

A 'verse' is basically a line/short paragraph from writing that has a rhythm, like a song or poem. So, 'verses' is just the plural version of it. 🎵

Whereas, 'versus' with a 'u' is another word for 'against', and can be shortened to 'vs'.

Here's a trick to help you remember which one you mean:

'It's them versUS us' 👫 🆚 👫

Are there any other homophones (words that sound the same but mean different things) that you get confused with?
